Before you book
An Ocean View King with balcony on the second or third floor is the sweet spot — the view without anyone walking past. The ground-floor fire pit rooms are the more romantic trade: your own fire outside, slightly less ocean.
Alila is Sanskrit for surprise. Marea is tide, in both Italian and Spanish. Surprises shaped by the tides — which is a fair description of the whole place in two words.
The restaurant has become a destination in its own right, and it fills. Reserve dinner when you reserve the room, not after you land.
About 35 minutes north of San Diego airport, an hour and a half south of Los Angeles. Swami's, Cardiff, Grandview and Beacons are all within a short bike ride.
There is a wetsuit rack on the balcony. Boards in the lobby quiver, storage downstairs, a concierge on the sand. You don't have to surf — watching the sets come in from the balcony with coffee is most of the appeal anyway.
Two guests maximum per room keeps the whole property calm. Not billed as adults-only, but it reads that way — in the best sense.
